BUILT-IN DIAGNOSTICS
SYSTEM INSTALLATION - START-UP - INITIAL TESTING
Testing can be accomplished with the computer in place and the data
lines initially un-wired. The computer should have a display screen and a keyboard.
Testing can use either the Sentry keypad or a standard computer keyboard. The Sentry
keypads have six function keys and the 10 number keys. The keyboard key layouts are shown
below.
To run the initial system test, the Sentry Operating Program
must include the completed configuration table for the building. The
configuration table lists all devices by addresses and includes device dipswitch settings,
data line numbers, and room numbers. In most installations the Sentry Operating Program disk is programmed
by Sentry with the address programming sheets provided by the installers.
Detailed information about the Sentry program and configuration table is in the
Programming Guide, document number 462-512B.
TURN ON
Turn on the computer.
The program boots up and displays the main screen. A number
of messages will appear in the Service Box and Alarm box to indicate the data lines and
other devices are disconnected.
Use the SILENCE Key or F6 to silence the console alarm beeper.
TEST DISPLAY SCREENS
NOTE: When the system is in the factory service mode, alarms will not
interrupt the service screen. All alarms that occurred while the system was in the service
mode will be displayed when you exit the system mode.
Press the MENU key until the
STANDARD MENU appears.
Press the K3 key (F4) to select the Factory test selection screen.
The Factory Test Menu will show. Note this menu will only list tests
for items installed in this particular system. The diagnostic system uses the facility's
configuration table to determine what equipment and configuration are installed. The
possible menu selection are listed below. They will appear based on the particular
system
configuration.

1. LOOP/DROP TEST
DATA LINE CHECKOUT
The most helpful test is to check the data lines. This is done with
selection 1: LOOP/DROP TEST.
The screen will show the 16 possible data ports with a highlighted
address number of the ports active in this facility.
Use the up/down arrow keys (K1 and
K2) to select the desired data loop
number, and press K3 to select.
Select the first data line.
This test shows the operation of one entire data line. The drops are
displayed by apartment number and address. They show in White when the device is
communicating to the console and shows in Red when the data signal is lost.
Connect the data line cable to the computer.
The screen will show all devices communicating with white numbering.
Drop 52 will always show as White, with an N/A after it. This address
is not used as a device address and means nothing during the test.
The green number below the drop shows the number of data errors that
have accumulated since the system was installed or last cleared. This number will show
errors saved from the disk through the present. Drops that are not assigned will begin
advancing up from zero.
If a data line is having problems, this screen can usually be used for
finding a panel that may be affecting the entire data line.
In the case of an entire data line failure, move data line connections
to determine if the problem is in the interface card or on the data line. If the trouble
is a device on the data line, use this screen while disconnecting sections of cable from
the terminal block to see if a particular section is causing the problem. Once the trouble
has been narrowed down to a group of apartments, the host panels in the group should be
unplugged. Reconnect the data line and plug in one panel at a time, checking to make sure
it is working. When you find the panel(s) that stop the data signal, replace them.
From the LOOP TEST screen, use
K1 to select another loop.
For system testing, use the MENU/EXIT key to get the Standard Menu.
Select FACTORY by pressing K3.
1. DROP TEST
The Drop Test screen is helpful for testing an individual device.
From the Loop Test screen, press K2 to get the drop test selection
screen. Use the Up/Down arrows to highlight a particular drop and press K3 to select. The
Drop Test screen shows the status of all data bits going into and out of the device. The
Check-In Assurance status (if active on this system) shows in the lower left.
The INPUT BIT STATUS column shows the state of the 16 bits coming from
the host panel to the console.
The OUTPUT BIT STATUS column shows the state of the 16 data bits from
the console to the panel.
2. LCD TEST
Selection 2 from the Factory Service Screen is for evaluation of the
LCD displays (if equipped).
Each of the installed LCD Displays will be listed, and by using
the up(K1) and down(K2) arrow keys each LCD can be selected by using the
K3 key. This will
access a screen which will show the data communication with the LCD. The blue numbers are
the data being transmitted to the LCD, and the yellows are what the console is receiving
back from the LCD. Most often LCD problems are caused by power line noise. If the console
is not receiving data back from the LCD, temporarily interrupt the power to the LCD to
force a reset. This may be accomplished from the console from the previous screen by
pressing F6, if the system was configured for this feature.
3. PAGER / VOICE TEST
Selection 3 from the Factory Service Screen will output a test message
to either the Model 644 Voice Synthesizer, or Model 652 Paging transmitter, if equipped.
This test can help to identify any connection or operation problems
with connected annunciator options.
4. PARALLEL INPUT TEST
Selection 4 from the Factory Service Screen will allow you to view the
input status of any installed Model 617 Parallel Input card if equipped.
By using the up(K1) and
down(K2) arrow keys each parallel input port
can be selected by using the K3 key. This will access a screen which will show the current
status of each input to the card.
5. VIEW REMOTE STATUS
Selection 5 from the Factory Service Screen will allow you to view the
communications between a remote expansion chassis and the host computer if so configured.
By using the up(K1) and
down(K2) arrow keys each remote expansion
chassis can be selected by using the K3 key. This will access a screen which will show the
communication between the host and remote consoles. The blue represents data transmitted
from the host and the yellow represents the data received from the remote.
If there is no data being received from the remote, then check the
remote console for proper operation.
6. VIEW HOST STATUS
Selection 6 from the Factory Service Screen will allow you to view the
communications between a remote expansion chassis and the host computer if so configured.
This will access a screen which will show the communication between the
host and remote consoles. The blue represents data transmitted from the remote and the
yellow represents the data received from the host.
If there is no data being received from the host, then check the host
console for proper operation.
7. VIEW SERIAL INPUT STATUS
Selection 7 from the Factory Service Screen will allow you to view the
communications received from connected equipment if so configured.
By using the up(K1) and
down(K2) arrow keys each serial input port can
be selected by using the K3 key. This will access a screen which will show the data as it
is received from connected equipment. This screen also shows a data value ( typically 0030
) for the port. If this value is different from expected, check the connection between the
console and the connected equipment.
8. STORE STATUS TO DISK
Selection 8 from the Factory Service Screen will write the current
status of the console to a status file STAT####.txt, which can be viewed using a text
editor.
9. RESET / CLEAR ALL ALARMS
Selection 9 from the Factory Service Screen will clear all alarms. This
will not clear alarms on connected equipment (Host panels, etc.) and those alarms will
reappear after the reset.
0. SYSTEM SHUTDOWN
Selection 0 from the Factory Service Screen will exit the Sentry System
and return to the DOS prompt.
After selecting 0 from the Factory Service Screen you will be asked to verify this
action by pressing the number 1 on the keypad. This will store the current status to disk
and exit the system. Remember that the 504 Watchdog card will attempt a system reset if it
has not been set to the service position.
